What you need to know for the 2024 election in Portland


· Ranked-Choice Voting

In the Nov. 5 election, Portlanders will elect a mayor, auditor, and three councilors to represent their district using ranked-choice voting.

What is ranked-choice voting? In a ranked choice voting system, voters have the option to rank candidates in order of preference instead of selecting only one candidate. Learn more in this video from Multnomah County Elections and also on the City of Portland website.

· What’s Your District?

Learn more about the City of Portland's geographic voting districts.

Currently, all of Portland’s City Commissioners are elected at-large; Portlanders vote and elect all candidates from anywhere in the city. However, starting in the November 2024 election, the City of Portland is moving to district-based elections. Portland voters will use these districts to elect three city councilors to represent them. You can look up your district with this handy tool.

At this City Club of Portland workshop, attended by over 150 Portlanders from all four of the city’s new council voting districts, local elections staff explained how it works. Watch the recording here.
