The 2024 NeighborWalks series is gearing up.

NeighborWalks is a collaborative community walking program brought to you by AARP Oregon, City of Portland Bureau of Transportation and Oregon Walks. Our vision is to get more people walking every day for health, transportation, environment, and community. Walks take place in the Portland area. Each walk is approximately two hours long and developed and led by AARP volunteer leaders with support from community partners. Join us for these intergenerational walks as we celebrate a community for all ages and abilities! Note that only trained service animals allowed on walks. Here's a video playlist of past walks!

Join us at Our Kickoff: History at Lone Fir Cemetery
SATURDAY, JUNE 8 | 10:00 AM | 2.1 miles

Hear about Washington High School to Revolution Hall and explore one of Oregon’s most historic places and Portland’s second largest arboretum, Lone Fir Cemetery. Among its notable occupants is Asa Lovejoy who lost the coin toss for naming rights of Portland.

Historic West Linn
TUESDAY, JUNE 18 |10:00 AM | 2 miles

Join us for a walk through one of the oldest settled towns in Oregon—the Willamette Neighborhood of West Linn. It will include 3 stops to hear West Linn Historical Society actors portraying the historical figures Nicholas Walden, Edward Eastham and Ellis Hughes. There are lots of interesting places for lunch afterwards.

We will stroll through Ladd’s Addition, one of our city’s oldest neighborhoods. Learn about early Portland history and the unique aspects of this area. Enjoy seeing majestic old homes, tree-lined boulevards and 4 rose gardens. 

Main Street, Tigard, Fanno Creek Park

We will follow Fanno Creek through the park and into downtown Tigard. We’ll see both historic buildings as well as new developments, including AVA Roasteria Headquarters and Alongside Senior Apartments, situated next to the Tigard Senior Center and Fanno Creek natural area.

Keen on Kerns
TUESDAY, AUGUST 6 | 10:00 AM | 1.95 miles

Walk through a SE Portland park, admire heritage trees, and pause by the historic Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral. We’ll see the new Barbie’s Village and learn about Indigenous-run Future Generations Collaborative housing and an early childhood learning center.

Nature Walk in Tualatin Hills
TUESDAY, AUGUST 20 | 10:00 AM | 1.75 miles

Enjoy a guided walk through the beautiful Tualatin Hills Nature Park, a 222-acre nature park and wildlife preserve in the heart of Beaverton. Explore the wetlands, forests and streams that serve as habitat for many living creatures including insects, frogs, deer and more.

Belly Up to Montavilla
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 7 | 10:00 AM | 2 miles

What started as a way-stop between Portland and Hood River is now a walkable urban area with shopping, dining, entertainment, public transportation and infill housing developments. We’ll also see a 1854 stone marker indicating the Willamette baseline.

Old and New at Orenco Station
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 17 | 10:00 AM | 2.4 miles

Come experience Orenco Station. This Hillsboro neighborhood is a planned urban town center, designed to be pedestrian-friendly with high-density development conveniently located by TriMet’s Blue light rail line. We will also walk through part of historic Orenco and the Orenco Woods Nature Park.

NeighborWalks Celebration
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 28 | 10:00 AM | 2.3 miles

We’ll walk Rose City Bluff (above the Rose City Golf Course), note wildlife habitat, volunteer-led restoration, park renovations and enjoy our last walk with neighbors near and far. Lunch and prizes to follow.

SW Trails/AARP Hike                      
Friday, July 12, 9 AM to Noon
Don Baack, AARP volunteer and SW Trails Board Member, will lead a 3 mile hike featuring 3 completed SW trails and a new project being developed. He will present the history of SW Portland (since 1850), the creation of SW Trails, hand out walking maps, and discuss the steps in planning and creating new trails. Please note, this hike will include several steep hills, some loose gravel, and will be longer than a typical NeighborWalk. There are no restrooms along the route. He suggests bringing water.

SW PDX has many streets without sidewalks. The SW Trails Network was designed to help people walk around SW neighborhoods on safer routes.

Meet just east of the Hillsdale Food Carts (south side of Capital Highway at Sunset Blvd), by Ida B. Wells High School Football Stadium. Parking is available at the school.

Oregon Walks/PBOT Walk and Learn
Saturday, July 27, 10:00
There are neighborhoods lacking sufficient pedestrian infrastructure throughout the Metro Region. Oregon Walks and Portland Bureau of Transportation are offering a walk that will highlight the safety and accessibility issues surrounding 122nd, and give examples of improvements that will ease travel for all pedestrians, biking, walking, and those using transit and mobility devices. This 2.2 mile walk will meet in front of Sacramento Elementary School, 11400 NE Sacramento. Please note: not all the streets have sidewalks on this walk, which limits accessibility. There are no restrooms. Bring your own water.
