Spring Football 2025

It’s an interesting Rite of Spring throughout collegiate football, this ritual we call spring football. It is 15 days of practice that gives coaches, players and fans a sample-size of what the upcoming season could look like. It’s an opportunity for veteran players to work on the aspects of the game that needed improvement, and a chance for the younger players to get a feel of the collegiate game.

As I stood on the sideline in War Memorial Stadium in late March watching the first day of Jay Sawvel’s second spring as Wyoming head coach, I thought about the evolution of football spring training, and where we are now.

It’s been 58 springs since I was introduced to this ritual. During my first Cowboy spring, Lloyd Eaton was the head coach, and hope for 1967 was sky-high. The Cowboys had just finished a 10-1 season and a Sun Bowl victory over Florida State to cap the 1966 campaign. Many of the players from that great team were returning. The excitement for the new season was at an all-time high.

That group would not disappoint. They were even better in ’67. It would produce an undefeated regular season, and a narrow loss in the Sugar Bowl of Jan. 1, 1968.

Whether the previous season was like that one, or like the one Wyoming experienced in 2024, players and coaches alike are always excited for spring ball. Excited to get it going again after a long winter of off-season conditioning. Make no mistake, Spring Ball is a grind, practice without a game. It’s a focus on fundamentals, on endless drills. It’s drudgery. It was a much different proposition back in the day. It was even more of a grind. There were more practices for one thing, and practices were far more physical for another. Injuries were more common, and almost expected. They were part of the process.

That mentality went away long ago. The training period has been reduced and coaches are far more cognizant of the physical well-being of their student-athletes. More players are held out of spring training, and there is a greater focus on keeping players healthy. Injuries still happen because the violent part of the game remains a major part of the game. But they have been reduced.

As the 2025 Cowboys were guided through spring training by Sawvel and his coaching staff, the physicality was evident, and so was the improvement. Some springs are more important than others. This spring training period was far more critical than that spring back in ’67. This team HAD to improve!

With the new way of doing business in college sports, there were 19 new faces for the Cowboys as spring training began. Unheard of in the past. For this Cowboy team there was a much greater urgency at getting better. To a man, every coach and player clearly understood that a three-win season was unacceptable. Following that experience Sawvel and his staff dissected every aspect of the program, and changes were made.

This is a better football team heading into the 2025 season than Jay’s first. There’s more team speed, there’s more experience, more leadership, more urgency and a sharper focus. This team is driven to making the upcoming season a successful one.

“Our biggest goal of this spring was to focus on how we start plays,” says Sawvel. “Things like our alignment, our footwork, where our eyes should be, our hand placement. We put a major emphasis on all of those fundamental aspects of the game that are critical to success. We took nothing for granted.”

As difficult as last season was, it was apparent that the Pokes began finding themselves during the final third of the season. They played much better as the year wound down, and everyone had a great time during that impressive win at Washington State to end the ’24 season. That feeling carried over through winter conditioning and spring training.

No matter what the outcome of the previous season, Spring Ball always has served to get me excited for the upcoming season. This spring was no different. I can’t wait. Only time will tell how much better this Cowboy edition is. I believe it is a much better product, and like all fans, my hope springs eternal. I’m sorry, I can’t help it.
