Top Volunteer Advocates for Early Cancer Detection

AARP Wyoming has awarded Sheridan resident Jack Wood the 2024 AARP Andrus Award for Community Service—the organization’s top state-level volunteer honor.

Wood, 74, has volunteered to raise awareness of early cancer detection and screening since 2016, when his daughter died from ovarian cancer shortly after her 45th birthday.

“I’ve also written letters to the Legislature to encourage their funding of early detection,” Wood says. “It’s just something I am very passionate about.”

Wood serves with the Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors, who promote the community and its businesses. The day after Thanksgiving, he and his wife, Kathleen, don the costumes of Santa and Mrs. Claus at the Sheridan Christmas Stroll. And every year, he cooks burgers and other food at the Sheridan Softball Association’s Justin Chase Memorial Tournament. The Woods moved to Sheridan in 2008 from California.

        <div class="RichTextArticleBody-body"><p><span class="Enhancement" ><span class="Enhancement-item"><a class="Link" href="https://states.aarp.org/wyoming/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">AARP Wyoming</a></span></span> has awarded Sheridan resident Jack Wood the <span class="Enhancement" ><span class="Enhancement-item"><a class="Link" href="https://www.aarp.org/volunteer/andrus-award-nominations.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">2024 AARP Andrus Award for Community Service</a></span></span>—the organization’s top state-level volunteer honor.<br><br>Wood, 74, has volunteered to raise awareness of early cancer detection and screening since 2016, when his daughter died from ovarian cancer shortly after her 45th birthday.<br><br>“I’ve also written letters to the Legislature to encourage their funding of early detection,” Wood says. “It’s just something I am very passionate about.”<br><br>Wood serves with the Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors, who promote the community and its businesses. The day after Thanksgiving, he and his wife, Kathleen, don the costumes of Santa and Mrs. Claus at the Sheridan Christmas Stroll. And every year, he cooks burgers and other food at the Sheridan Softball Association’s Justin Chase Memorial Tournament.         <div class="RichTextArticleBody-body"><p><span class="Enhancement" ><span class="Enhancement-item"><a class="Link" href="https://states.aarp.org/wyoming/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">AARP Wyoming</a></span></span> has awarded Sheridan resident Jack Wood the <span class="Enhancement" ><span class="Enhancement-item"><a class="Link" href="https://www.aarp.org/volunteer/andrus-award-nominations.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">2024 AARP Andrus Award for Community Service</a></span></span>—the organization’s top state-level volunteer honor.<br><br>Wood, 74, has volunteered to raise awareness of early cancer detection and screening since 2016, when his daughter died from ovarian cancer shortly after her 45th birthday.<br><br>“I’ve also written letters to the Legislature to encourage their funding of early detection,” Wood says. “It’s just something I am very passionate about.”<br><br>Wood serves with the Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors, who promote the community and its businesses. The day after Thanksgiving, he and his wife, Kathleen, don the costumes of Santa and Mrs. Claus at the Sheridan Christmas Stroll. And every year, he cooks burgers and other food at the Sheridan Softball Association’s Justin Chase Memorial Tournament.         <div class="RichTextArticleBody-body"><p><span class="Enhancement" ><span class="Enhancement-item"><a class="Link" href="https://states.aarp.org/wyoming/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">AARP Wyoming</a></span></span> has awarded Sheridan resident Jack Wood the <span class="Enhancement" ><span class="Enhancement-item"><a class="Link" href="https://www.aarp.org/volunteer/andrus-award-nominations.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">2024 AARP Andrus Award for Community Service</a></span></span>—the organization’s top state-level volunteer honor.<br><br>Wood, 74, has volunteered to raise awareness of early cancer detection and screening since 2016, when his daughter died from ovarian cancer shortly after her 45th birthday.<br><br>“I’ve also written letters to the Legislature to encourage their funding of early detection,” Wood says. “It’s just something I am very passionate about.”<br><br>Wood serves with the Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors, who promote the community and its businesses. The day after Thanksgiving, he and his wife, Kathleen, don the costumes of Santa and Mrs. Claus at the Sheridan Christmas Stroll. And every year, he cooks burgers and other food at the Sheridan Softball Association’s Justin Chase Memorial Tournament.         <div class="RichTextArticleBody-body"><p><span class="Enhancement" ><span class="Enhancement-item"><a class="Link" href="https://states.aarp.org/wyoming/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">AARP Wyoming</a></span></span> has awarded Sheridan resident Jack Wood the <span class="Enhancement" ><span class="Enhancement-item"><a class="Link" href="https://www.aarp.org/volunteer/andrus-award-nominations.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">2024 AARP Andrus Award for Community Service</a></span></span>—the organization’s top state-level volunteer honor.<br><br>Wood, 74, has volunteered to raise awareness of early cancer detection and screening since 2016, when his daughter died from ovarian cancer shortly after her 45th birthday.<br><br>“I’ve also written letters to the Legislature to encourage their funding of early detection,” Wood says. “It’s just something I am very passionate about.”<br><br>Wood serves with the Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors, who promote the community and its businesses. The day after Thanksgiving, he and his wife, Kathleen, don the costumes of Santa and Mrs. Claus at the Sheridan Christmas Stroll. And every year, he cooks burgers and other food at the Sheridan Softball Association’s Justin Chase Memorial Tournament.         <div class="RichTextArticleBody-body"><p><span class="Enhancement" ><span class="Enhancement-item"><a class="Link" href="https://states.aarp.org/wyoming/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">AARP Wyoming</a></span></span> has awarded Sheridan resident Jack Wood the <span class="Enhancement" ><span class="Enhancement-item"><a class="Link" href="https://www.aarp.org/volunteer/andrus-award-nominations.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">2024 AARP Andrus Award for Community Service</a></span></span>—the organization’s top state-level volunteer honor.<br><br>Wood, 74, has volunteered to raise awareness of early cancer detection and screening since 2016, when his daughter died from ovarian cancer shortly after her 45th birthday.<br><br>“I’ve also written letters to the Legislature to encourage their funding of early detection,” Wood says. “It’s just something I am very passionate about.”<br><br>Wood serves with the Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors, who promote the community and its businesses. The day after Thanksgiving, he and his wife, Kathleen, don the costumes of Santa and Mrs. Claus at the Sheridan Christmas Stroll. And every year, he cooks burgers and other food at the Sheridan Softball Association’s Justin Chase Memorial Tournament.         <div class="RichTextArticleBody-body"><p><span class="Enhancement" ><span class="Enhancement-item"><a class="Link" href="https://states.aarp.org/wyoming/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">AARP Wyoming</a></span></span> has awarded Sheridan resident Jack Wood the <span class="Enhancement" ><span class="Enhancement-item"><a class="Link" href="https://www.aarp.org/volunteer/andrus-award-nominations.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">2024 AARP Andrus Award for Community Service</a></span></span>—the organization’s top state-level volunteer honor.<br><br>Wood, 74, has volunteered to raise awareness of early cancer detection and screening since 2016, when his daughter died from ovarian cancer shortly after her 45th birthday.<br><br>“I’ve also written letters to the Legislature to encourage their funding of early detection,” Wood says. “It’s just something I am very passionate about.”<br><br>Wood serves with the Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors, who promote the community and its businesses. The day after Thanksgiving, he and his wife, Kathleen, don the costumes of Santa and Mrs. Claus at the Sheridan Christmas Stroll. And every year, he cooks burgers and other food at the Sheridan Softball Association’s Justin Chase Memorial Tournament.         <div class="RichTextArticleBody-body"><p><span class="Enhancement" ><span class="Enhancement-item"><a class="Link" href="https://states.aarp.org/wyoming/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">AARP Wyoming</a></span></span> has awarded Sheridan resident Jack Wood the <span class="Enhancement" ><span class="Enhancement-item"><a class="Link" href="https://www.aarp.org/volunteer/andrus-award-nominations.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">2024 AARP Andrus Award for Community Service</a></span></span>—the organization’s top state-level volunteer honor.<br><br>Wood, 74, has volunteered to raise awareness of early cancer detection and screening since 2016, when his daughter died from ovarian cancer shortly after her 45th birthday.<br><br>“I’ve also written letters to the Legislature to encourage their funding of early detection,” Wood says. “It’s just something I am very passionate about.”<br><br>Wood serves with the Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors, who promote the community and its businesses. The day after Thanksgiving, he and his wife, Kathleen, don the costumes of Santa and Mrs. Claus at the Sheridan Christmas Stroll. And every year, he cooks burgers and other food at the Sheridan Softball Association’s Justin Chase Memorial Tournament.         <div class="RichTextArticleBody-body"><p><span class="Enhancement" ><span class="Enhancement-item"><a class="Link" href="https://states.aarp.org/wyoming/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">AARP Wyoming</a></span></span> has awarded Sheridan resident Jack Wood the <span class="Enhancement" ><span class="Enhancement-item"><a class="Link" href="https://www.aarp.org/volunteer/andrus-award-nominations.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">2024 AARP Andrus Award for Community Service</a></span></span>—the organization’s top state-level volunteer honor.<br><br>Wood, 74, has volunteered to raise awareness of early cancer detection and screening since 2016, when his daughter died from ovarian cancer shortly after her 45th birthday.<br><br>“I’ve also written letters to the Legislature to encourage their funding of early detection,” Wood says. “It’s just something I am very passionate about.”<br><br>Wood serves with the Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors, who promote the community and its businesses. The day after Thanksgiving, he and his wife, Kathleen, don the costumes of Santa and Mrs. Claus at the Sheridan Christmas Stroll. And every year, he cooks burgers and other food at the Sheridan Softball Association’s Justin Chase Memorial Tournament.
