Moose Lake Golf Club

History:In 1929, three men from Moose Lake had the vision for a community golf course.  The three were a banker, Richard Lewis, an attorney, Clayton Dodge, and a dentist, Elmer J. Williams.  By enlisting additional community support, they were able to purchase the Romanoski farm on the south shore of Sand Lake.  In designing the course, the local leaders solicited the aid of a sports writer, Runcie Martin, from Duluth.  Runcie engaged the help of the groundskeeper of Nemadji Golf Course in Superior.  That's where it all began.By 1950, according to the local paper, "there were approximately 37 stockholding members and about 20 season ticket holders.  A share of stock sold for $50.00 plus a $10.00 federal tax.  Dues for the stockholders were $10.00 per year, while season tickets were $15.00 or $20.00 for a husband and wife."  During this time, green fees were $.50 cents per round or $1.00 for all day.In 1952, Moose Lake Golf Club decided to establish grass greens.  Swan Eklund, a local businessman, was the prime mover in the effort to raise money to create grass greens.  Swan found 20 stockholders who donated $300.00 each and they agreed to borrrow up to $4500. from a local bank.  The board of directors at this time would not do any work on the greens until all the money was raised.  By 1954 the grass greens were completed. The annual  Short Stop Tournament, which still draws capacity entrants each year, began in 1956.  The winner of that tournament was David Eklund.  In 1961, a new clubhouse was built and the holes were reconfigured to what we know today.  This reconfiguration was triggered by the replacement of the original clubhouse, which was located near the present #6 tee, which was at the time the #1 tee.  Volunteers dismantled a home donated by a local doctor.  With these materials, they built the present clubhouse.  Later an addition was built on to the east side of the building.  In 2002, additional property was purchased allowing the #5 tee to have more separation from the #4 green, enhancing both safety and aesthetics.  Also in 2002, a new tee- to- green state- of- the- art technology irrigation system was installed.  We continue to make strides in the best possible ways to enhance our golf course, with members and guest of the Moose Lake Golf Club, making this a great place to get away and enjoy.
